A recent study of 2000 motorists by webuyanycar.com shows that 53% of BMW drivers are using their horn at least once a journey. Alternatively only 5% of Nissan drivers were likely to blast their horn unnecessarily. The main reasons reported for sounding the horn were vehicles pulling out in front of drivers and vehicles stationary at green traffic lights.
Motorists will sound their horns for many reasons, but if unsure when to honk, our friend the highway code gives us this advice from rule 112:
Use only while your vehicle is moving and you need to warn other road users of your presence. Never sound your horn aggressively. You MUST NOT use your horn
- while stationary on the road
- when driving in a built-up area between the hours of 11.30 pm and 7.00 am
except when another road user poses a danger.
