on June 20th, 2011 at 10:23 pmA new online service lets vehicle owners hire out their car by the hour, day or week, helping motorists keep on top of the spiralling costs associated with running a vehicle.Nick Koidl regularly receives texts telling him someone nearby would like to borrow his car for the day – and pay for the privilege. The 31-year-old from Battersea, London, checks the inquiry online and arranges to meet up. After a quick check of the vehicle, he hands over the keys for his Mercedes A160 and watches it drive off. This isn’t as odd as it sounds – and it’s perfectly secure. Nick is a member of WhipCar, an online service that lets drivers rent out their car when they’re not using it – by the hour, day or week. “A friend encouraged me to try WhipCar because I wanted to minimise my motoring expenses,” says Nick, who works in renewable energy project finance. “I’ve rented it nine times in the past four months and I love it because it’s so simple to use. I usually charge £30 to £34 per day, but it’s trial and error depending on demand. “For anyone with a car that’s not used for a few hours a day, it’s the perfect way to earn some extra income.” More
