Amazing, that someone has been so unsuccessful on so many occasions, especially when there is so many quality training aids available. He has spent a great deal of time and money in fees over the years!

Until now all the questions used in the driving theory test have been published. These changes will mean that learner drivers and riders gain a better understanding of driving theory, because they can no longer rely on simply learning which options are correct for individual questions.

Road Safety Minister Mike Penning said:

“By bringing a stop to publication of theory test questions we aim to encourage candidates to prepare by learning each topic area thoroughly rather than just memorising the questions and answers.

“The intention is to improve candidates’ knowledge and understanding of driving theory, so that they are more able to retain and apply it when they are on the road.”

The familiar theory test books and software still offer revision questions for candidates to test themselves and assess their progress. They now also have exercises so learners can practice applying their knowledge on each topic to case studies. There are also new sections of revision support for motorcyclists and a free e-book for car drivers.

The agency has also launched its first iPhone apps for theory test revision, which also help candidates to study and monitor their progress at their convenience as they approach their test date. These are available from the iTunes Store.

DSA has made a change to online bookings for theory tests. When booking online, you’ll need to give a contact email address to get your confirmation.

If you book via DSA’s contact centre

If you book your test via DSA’s contact centre, you’ll automatically be asked to give an email address for where you want the confirmation to be sent. You’ll only get a posted confirmation if you are unable to give an email address over the phone.

If you’re booking more than one theory test at a time

If you need to book more than one theory test at the same time, if all your bookings are allocated to a single order number, you’ll only get one booking confirmation.

This confirmation will give details of all the tests and candidates that have been booked under that single order number. If you want to make multiple bookings over the phone, you’ll need to consider which email or postal address you give for receipt of the booking confirmation. Online bookings are not affected.

Viewing, checking and printing your booking confirmation

You can go back into the online system at any time and view your theory test booking and appointment confirmation. The system will then allow you to re-print your booking confirmation.

You now won’t need to bring your theory test booking confirmation when turning up for your theory test.

The apps encourage candidates to follow a three-step process in preparation for their test to help ensure they really understand the theory behind driving:
1   Study – these apps include background information on all 14 topics covered in the test.
2   Practice – candidates can select specific topics to answer questions on and see how much they have learnt.
3   Mock test – with 57 minutes to answer 50 randomly selected questions, just like the real thing.

The official apps include the full DSA explanation for every answer and references to the source materials where candidates can find out more for complete test preparation. They are the only apps on the market which include official practice case studies for each topic, and there are lots of other extras, including a complete digital version of The Official Highway Code and a theory test centre locator. Candidates can review all their answers to see where they need a bit more work and their progress is clearly monitored throughout, making it quick and simple for learners to see when they are ready to pass. There is also a helpful voiceover option included for those with reading difficulties and/or dyslexia.

The Official DSA Theory Test Kit for Car Drivers app also includes preparation for the hazard perception part of the test. There are official DSA interactive video clips so learners can get a feel for how this part of the test works, with the ability to review their performance to understand their score.
