Compulsory post-test training call for young drivers!
on November 23rd, 2010 at 10:49 pmThere is an urgent need for compulsory post-test training of younger drivers, according to the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM). The charity says that deaths among 17-25-year-olds could be cut by up to a third if such training was introduced after drivers have successfully obtained their licence. It claims that the onus now lies with the Government to conduct a thorough review of driver training. And the IAM says that it is writing to road safety minister Mike Penning, “raising the urgent need” for training – something which the charity believes “would not be an unpopular option”. It adds that a driver who ‘failed’ the training would not be taken off the road, but would be required to sit a second phase of short coaching sessions and driving practice away from public roads within a year of the original test pass. According to the IAM, similar measures in Austria have resulted in a 30% reduction in fatalities of young drivers. CEO Simon Best said: “We need no reminding that 17-25 year olds – particularly young men – proportionally have more crashes and suffer more death and injury on our roads than any other group. “Despite this, very little is being done to ensure that young people improve their driving after passing the test.
