Driver improvement courses are not working!
on September 27th, 2010 at 10:43 pmThe plans for special training for poor drivers were included in the 2006 Road Safety Act, but have yet to be introduced. However research commissioned by the Department for Transport has suggested that the new course would be a waste of time. It was planned to offer fresh training to motorists convicted of a number of offences, including careless driving, speeding, failing to comply with traffic lights or going the wrong way down a one-way street. Drivers with between seven and 11 points on their licence and those who are receive a ban could be offered the course. In return for participating in the scheme the motorists would have the length of the ban shortened or the number of points put on their licence cut. Police already offer drivers caught speeding courses as an alternative to points on their licence and some forces also have courses in place for minor motoring offences which they offer as an alternative to prosecution. This would be a new curriculum for more serious offenders who have been convicted by the courts. But the research in a report called “Offenders and Post Court Disposal Courses” was pessimistic about whether the course would work after interviewing police, magistrates and offenders themselves. Some drivers even said they would rather take the points or ban rather than spend time on the courses. More
