Thousands of learner drivers are facing test day disappointment if they turn up in a Toyota because worried examiners are refusing to get into the cars. The Driving Standards Agency has sent out an urgent warning to all 400 test centres in the country banning staff from sitting alongside novices at the wheel of any car subject to a safety scare. The alarm follows the recall of 320,000 of the cars by the manufacturers following mechanical problems – in the case of Toyotas, it has been discovered that the accelerator could jam.
