The most popular song, by The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl, reached the UK number two spot in Christmas 1987. But older drivers would rather give the hit a miss, according to the survey, compiled by the AA and Populus. As many as 29 per cent of drivers over 65 said they did not want to hear any of the top 10 tunes, which included Chris Rea’s Driving Home for Christmas (in second place) and Bing Crosby’s White Christmas (third). John Lennon’s Happy Christmas (War is Over), which was in ninth position, was most popular in Northern Ireland, while Middlesbrough star Chris Rea’s biggest support came from motorists in north-east England. Most support for Sir Cliff Richard came from drivers aged over 55, but their backing was not quite enough to get Sir Cliff’s Mistletoe and Wine into the top 10. More
