This year, the rate of untaxed vehicles on the roads is thought to be around 0.5%, compared to a figure of 0.7% last year. The drop could mean vehicle tax evasion will cost £30 million less in lost revenue this year, at around £49 million for 2008-09 compared with £79 million in the previous year. However, the amount of motorcyclists evading vehicle excise duty (VED) has increased in the past year, from 2.3% in 2008 to 3.2%. Across the country, the East Midlands was the region with the least amount of tax evasion, with only 0.4% of drivers not paying, while Scotland had the highest amount with 0.7%.
