on December 15th, 2009 at 10:16 pmSLOUGH in Berkshire, which has promoted itself as a “safety town” for 50 years, has been named the riskiest place in the UK for motor accidents – for the third year running. Based on the frequency of accident claims per insured driver, Slough had an accident rate in 2009 that was 41.3% above the national average. Bradford in Yorkshire (39.1% above the national average) and Birmingham (38% above) were the next most “dangerous” places in an annual index by insurance company Endsleigh. In the late 1950s, Slough was one of the first towns to introduce a linked sequence of traffic lights timed to stay green if drivers stuck to the 30mph speed limit. Over the years, the number of lights in the town has grown. The figures showed that Belfast was the safest UK town for accidents, with a claims rate 44.9% below the national average. Bangor in North Wales was the next safest (44.6% below) followed by Swansea (24.6% below). More
