Motorists using hand-held mobiles while driving up 27%!
on February 14th, 2010 at 11:26 pmDrivers ignore obvious dangers by continuing to use mobile phones while they drive. The proportion of motorists using hand-held mobile phones while driving has jumped by 27 per cent, casting serious doubt on the effectiveness of enforcement against law-breakers. Over the past year the number of drivers using phones increased from 1.1 per cent to 1.4 per cent for car drivers, and from 2.2 per cent to 2.6 per cent for van and lorry drivers, according to figures from the Department for Transport. The Institute of Advanced Motorists said that motorists were clearly ignoring advice about using hand-held phones while driving. “Along with consistent and high-profile policing, drivers need to be educated about how and why driving on the phone is so dangerous,” said Neil Grieg, IAM director of policy and research. “Deaths and injuries linked to mobile pone use wreck lives and are completely avoidable. The majority of road users deserve to be protected from an irresponsible and selfish minority. “Enforcement is the key weapon against them. More high-profile policing is the answer but unfortunately many police forces appear to be cutting back in this direction.” More
