New drug driving laws could soon be in place…..

The Prime Minister is intending to change the law so those convicted of drug driving could soon face up to £5000 fine, a minimum of 12 months driving ban, and even a jail term of up to 6 months.  ”Drug drivers are a deadly menace – they must be stopped and that is exactly what I intend to do,” he said. The new offence sends out a clear message that if you drive whilst under the influence of drugs you will not get away with it.” The Police will use new drug detection machines that will be approved for use next year.

Would be a very sensible change, if and when the detection methods are proved to be effective. Driving under the influence of drugs, is a real problem to road safety and needs to be taken as seriously as drink driving has been for many years.

9,000 motorists still driving with the maximum 12 points…..

Figures were obtained by the Co-operative Motor Group have shown that a staggering 9,000 motorists are still on the road despite still having accrued the maximum of twelve penalty points allowed on their licences in a three year period. In these cases the courts have used their discretion and allowed the offender to avoid a driving ban. Blackpool, Oldham and Manchester were released the top three offending areas.

Amazing that so many repeat offenders are allowed to continue their driving, when they have clearly broken the law (and been caught) many times. The rules are in place to keep everyone safer on the roads, so why is everyone not punished the same?

Congratulations to Ant Hensman, for passing his practical driving test on 3rd May in Bedford. An excellent achievement to pass his practical test first time with just three minor faults, on a very waterlogged morning.

Government and Insurers aim to tackle whiplash compensation problem…..

The Government is meeting with insurance companies to discuss the growing problem of this countries Whiplash culture. Insurance claims that are inflated or fictitious have lead to a massive increase in premiums of the last few years. It has been estimated that whiplash injury claims cost insurers over £2 billion last year, adding around £90 to each motor policy.

There is certainly a massive problem with the present system, as the ‘crash for crash’ scams have shown. Its hard to know what to do, but some form of tough legislation and checking procedures need to be in place, to protect honest motorists who are paying for others to earn easy money!

Motorists not prepared for flat tyres…..

A recent survey by Kwikfit has shown that a high number of drivers are not ready to deal with a flat tyre, with some not knowing if they have a spare tyre!

About a quarter of motorists get a flat every year, and the survey showed that only around a third would not know how to change the tyre, even if they had all the correct equipment.

Kwik Fit’s communications director, Roger Griggs, is concerned by the findings.  He said ”It’s worrying how many drivers don’t know what provision they have for a puncture, but it’s even more of a concern to see how many have absolutely nothing in their car to deal with a deflated tyre”

Always important to have the knowledge, the correct tyre and equipment to change a tyre if needed. When you are in the middle of nowhere, it may take a long time for help to arrive!
