Furious traders at first thought they had been vandalised when they saw the scruffy, crooked yellow lines and white, mis-shapen parking bays on the historic cobbles of their town. Some car-owners even reported their vehicles being sprayed with white and yellow paint when council workers carried out the two-day botch-job in Yarm, Teesside this week. It has caused chaos among the heavily-used parking bays as vans and family cars are unable to fit in the spaces which have been made too small. The affluent area is frequented by footballers and businessmen and is the local shopping area of former England manager Steve McClaren, who lives nearby. The debacle has driven the council to apologise and announce that they will be replaced this weekend. High street trader Kaye Allan said: ‘People are honestly just stunned. Some of the lines are thin, while others are really fat and uneven. It is absolutely appalling. ‘I really didn’t believe they were from the council – I thought it was a practical joke. We have become the laughing stock of the country and it is ruining our beautiful cobbles.
